I keep finding more and more in my voice. Found more today!
I listen to EVERYONE! A choir member was singing so free, so I tried out what he was doing but with my voice.
I can hear it in others, but I have the hardest time actually critiquing myself. Maybe I'm Loonte and narcissistic. I mean loony ;)
How do YOU know when YOUR voice is free? Or does it even matter? What does vocal freedom entail? Is it the same for every genre?
I'm not adequately knowledgeable in Estill methods. According to what I understand, there's flow phonation and compressed phonation. For classical singing, all we're taught is flow phonation. If it isn't flow, it isn't "healthy" or "free".
So when I said I found more freedom in my voice, I found more airflow! When I'm not singing classical music, I'm not in flow. That's easy cuz that's basically where I speak. I'm thinking of modifying my speaking voice closer to flow, so it can influence my classical singing for the better.
What's your interpretation of vocal freedom for your genre of music?
Here's mine: http://www.classicaltocontemporary.com/blog/free-singing-does-it-exist
Do you find you're attracted to voices that (could) resemble your voice?
Specific to my style, I like big, loud, powerful voices. Not dramatics necessarily but voices with UMPH!
What kinds of voices does everyone else like? And is it potentially similar to your voice?
I don't typically like male voices except for countertenors! Quite sad since I'm a dude! LOL But it might have been a good thing. I never tried to sound like anyone else because I didn't like any male singers in classical singing. I do like them in R&B and stuff. I like Ludacris, but his voice isn't necessarily operatic! LOL
Here's a small list of people I like in the classical world:
Countertenor: Phillipe Jaroussky and David Hansen - I've always wanted to sing this voice type!
Bigger Soprano: Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Birgit Nilsson, Luana DeVol (bias cuz she's one of my teachers!!!), Shirley Verrett, Joan Sutherland
Smaller Soprano: Kathleen Battle, Kiri Te Kanawa,
Mezzo: Marilyn Horne
Tenor: Jon Vickers, Gianfranco Cecchele
I didn't get into actually singing contemporary stuff until recently. I really like: Ludacris, Missy Elliott, Lil Kim, Michael Jackson... a bunch of people!!! I never bothered to remember anyone's name until I got older LOL
One recording I really like is Leontyne Price (bigger soprano) singing rather "small"!!!
Start at 1:47 if it doesn't embed. I LOVE this recording, and it's not long, so listen to its entirety if you have time!!!
